Saturday Tennis: Women Defeat Conference Rival Albany, While Men Win at Richmond

    Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams recorded victories on Saturday, as the women defeated conference rival Albany, 5-2 and the men triumphed at Richmond, 5-2.

     

    The women (2-3 on the season) swept the doubles matches to earn that point and won four of the six singles contests. Senior Pascaline Cette and sophomore Alice Chen led the way, combining at No. 1 doubles for an 8-2 victory and each winning in straight sets in singles. Chen won at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5 over Aimee Kern, while Cette won a first-set tie-breaker and triumphed, 7-6 (3), 6-2 over Kim Weltman. Junior No. 5 Joy Adewumi and sophomore No. 6 Barbara Couto also posted victories.

     

    The men (5-2) lost the doubles point, but won five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets. Seniors David Jackson and Irfan Shamasdin were double winners, as they combined for an 8-6 doubles triumph, then posted singles victories at the No. 4 and No. 3 slots respectively. Jackson defeated Sami Belakhief, 6-2, 6-3, while Shamasdin dispatched of Michael Sommer, 6-4, 6-1.
