Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC men’s and women’s tennis teams swept Morgan State by identical 7-0 scores in matches played at the Hilton Racquet Club in Baltimore, Md. The men improve to 4-1 on the season, while the women captured their first match and are 1-2.
For the men, all six singles matches were decided in straight sets. No. 1 seed Chris Meyer (New Market, Md.) overcame a tough match and defeated Disa Mhembere, 7-5, 7-6 (4). Freshmen John Dixon (Lemoyne, Pa.) made his debut in the starting six and won a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Dmitry Chekhlatyy at No. 6 singles. The Retrievers won all three doubles matches, including a challenging 8-6 win by the No. 1 duo of David Jackson (Eldersburg, Md.) and Irfan Shamasdin (Ontario, Canada) who edged Mhembere and Kevon Charles, 8-6.
The results were similar for the ladies as UMBC won all six singles matches and UMBC’s No. 1 seed, sophomore Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md.) overcome a tough challenge to prevail. She edged Valaa Elsir, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-1. The Retrievers also won all three doubles matches.
The women next play at Temple on Feb. 23, while the men travel to face Army on Feb. 24.
