Boston, Mass.—The men’s tennis team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 6-1 victory over conference rival Boston University on Saturday afternoon. The Terrier women’s team, which has won 14 straight America East titles, defeated UMBC, 6-1, in the Retrievers’ first match of the season.

The men took the doubles point, then won five of six singles matches to secure the victory. Sophomore No. 1 singles seed Chris Meyer (New Market, Md.) split sets with Boston’s Gulio Gallarotti, 4-6, 6-3, but captured the deciding set convincingly, 6-0. Sophomore No. 5 Logan Bricker (Shenandoah, Va.) won his match, 6-4, 7-6 over Daniel Frid, taking the second set tie-breaker, 7-2, while senior No. 6 Fernando Ferreira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) captured a tough match, 6-1, 4-6, (10-7) over Tim Sichler.

“It was a good match for us to win,” head coach Keith Puryear said. “I thought that we kept our composure in tough conditions and fought hard today. Every conference match has a lot riding on it. I thought that we handled the conditions today with aplomb.”

The women, playing with two freshmen and two sophomores in the starting lineup, faced the Terriers in a rematch of last year’s America East title match. Junior Joy Adewumi (Phoenix, Arix.) won UMBC’s lone match at No. 6 singles, triumphing, 5-7, 6-2 (10-5) over Elizabeth Corrao. Freshman Emily Mannix (Hillsborough, N.J.) lost a tough 6-4, 2-6 (10-7) decision at No. 5 singles to Boston’sDanielle Abraham.

“I felt that it was a great to have our first match against the defending America East champs.” Puryear said. “It was a good test for us. I saw definite promise. If we can continue to do the things we need to do to continue to improve, we are going to be a very good team.”

The women travel to New York to face Columbia University on Friday.
