1/28/2008

Nick Savage-Pollock posted four wins in UMBC's 2-1 weekend in Blackburg.

Blacksburg, Va.--The UMBC men's tennis team opened the 2008 campaign by capturing two of three matches at Virginia Tech's Larsen Bowker Shootout this weekend. The Retrievers opened with a 5-2 win over St. Bonaventure, then fell to 35th-ranked Virginia Tech, 7-0 on Saturday. UMBC finished the weekend with a tight 4-3 decision over Charlotte on Sunday.

Junior Nick Savage-Pollock (Montreal, Quebec) was the lone Retriever to go 4-0 in the wins over St. Bonaventure and Charlotte. He won a tight 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 decision of Bonnies' No. 4 Chris Post, then combined with senior Fernando Ferreira (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) to win at No. 2 doubles, 8-2. Elevated to the No. 2 slot vs. Charlotte, he defeated Ricky Cuellar, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, then teammed with Ferreira to win at No. 2 doubles, 8-3.

Savage-Pollock nearly earned a point in singles vs. the Hokies, but dropped a tough 6-4, 5-7, (12-10) decision at No. 3 to Yoann Re.

Sophomore Chris Meyer (New Market, Md.) won both his singles matches at the No. 1 slot, including a tough three-setter over St. Bonaventure's Leo Mochizuki, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (5).

"I think that this team again showed its character in the way we competed Sunday against Charlotte and all weekend in our matches," said head coach Keith Puryear.
