Tennis Teams See First Action of the Fall Campaign

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams saw their first action of the fall campaign this past weekend. The men competed at the Cornell Invitational, while the women took part in the Army Invitational.

On the men’s side, seniors Fernando Ferriera and Irfan Shamasdin advanced the furthest in the main draw. Ferreria won three matches and advances to the finals in the D Flight before falling in the tighest of matches to Alex Marovich of conference rival Stony Brook, 7-5, 6-7(4), 7-6(5). Shamasdin won a pair of matches before dropping a straight-set decision to Andy Peters of Middlebury.

Sophomore Chris Meyer dropped his first match at A Flight, but won three matches to capture the consolation bracket.

The women’s action was highlighted by the performances of senior Pascaline Cette and freshman Emily Mannix. Cette, competed at No. 1 singles, and won three matches, including a pair of three-setters vs. opponents from Army and Rutgers. She fell in the semifinals to Denise Harijanto of Buffalo by a score of 6-0, 2-6, 9-11.

Mannix won three matches at No. 4 singles before dropping a straight set decision to Zena Williams of Duquesne in the finals.
