Five Athletes Named to Tennis All-Academic Team

5/21/2007

Adriana Fonseca is one of four UMBC women named to the All-Academic team.

BOSTON—A total of seven UMBC athletes have been named to the men’s and women’s tennis and track and field All-Academic teams for the Spring 2007 season, the conference announced Friday (May 18).

All-Conference Tennis First-Team selection sophomore Nick Savage-Pollock was named to the men’s tennis All-Academic team, while senior Adriana Fonseca, junior Pascaline Cette, and sophomores Joy Adewumi and Cornelia Carapcea were named to the women’s tennis All-Academic team.  Junior Aaron James and senior Jenelle Wilson were named to the men’s and women’s track and field All-Academic teams, respectively.

Savage-Pollock helped UMBC to its first America East Conference title, going 2-0 in #5 singles matches and 1-0 in doubles matches during the America East Tournament.  Savage-Pollock was 11-9 in singles matches during the 2007 season, and 4-2 in all conference matches, while holding a 13-6 record at #1 doubles with Fredi Voorman.

Carapcea, Cette, and Fonseca were named to the Second-Team All-Conference following the America East Tournament, with Cette and Fonseca earning singles victories in UMBC’s quarterfinal win over Hartford, Cette, Fonseca, and Carapcea earning victories in the semi-final match against Binghamton.  Adewumi teamed with Carapcea for a #3 doubles win against Binghamton.

Wilson was named to the women’s outdoor track and field All-Academic team for the second time since the teams were instituted in 2006, as well as being named to both the 2006 and 2007 indoor track and field All-Academic Teams.  At the 2007 America East Outdoor Championships, Wilson finished third in the 400-meter dash and was part of the fourth place 4 x 100m relay and seventh place 4 x 400m relay.

This is the first time James has been named to the outdoor All-Academic team after garnering indoor accolades for 2006 and 2007.  James finished third in the 110m hurdles and was part of the 4 x 100m relay that finished third at the 2007 America East Outdoor Championships.

Each All-Academic Team has been selected based on the student-athlete’s academic and athletic accomplishments. Academic achievement for consideration requires student-athletes to have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 entering the season. Athletic accomplishment standards vary between team sports and individual sports. For track & field, student-athletes are required to be a top-three finisher at the conference championship meet. Team size for individual sports is determined by the number of all-conference honorees who possess the minimum academic requirement. Freshman are not eligible for the All-Academic Team.
