BOSTON—A total of seven UMBC athletes have been named to the men’s and women’s tennis and track and field All-Academic teams for the Spring 2007 season, the conference announced Friday (May 18).
All-Conference Tennis First-Team selection sophomore Nick Savage-Pollock was named to the men’s tennis All-Academic team, while senior Adriana Fonseca, junior Pascaline Cette, and sophomores Joy Adewumi and Cornelia Carapcea were named to the women’s tennis All-Academic team. Junior Aaron James and senior Jenelle Wilson were named to the men’s and women’s track and field All-Academic teams, respectively.
Savage-Pollock helped UMBC to its first America East Conference title, going 2-0 in #5 singles matches and 1-0 in doubles matches during the America East Tournament. Savage-Pollock was 11-9 in singles matches during the 2007 season, and 4-2 in all conference matches, while holding a 13-6 record at #1 doubles with Fredi Voorman.
Carapcea, Cette, and Fonseca were named to the Second-Team All-Conference following the America East Tournament, with Cette and Fonseca earning singles victories in UMBC’s quarterfinal win over
This is the first time James has been named to the outdoor All-Academic team after garnering indoor accolades for 2006 and 2007. James finished third in the 110m hurdles and was part of the 4 x 100m relay that finished third at the 2007 America East Outdoor Championships.
Each All-Academic Team has been selected based on the student-athlete’s academic and athletic accomplishments. Academic achievement for consideration requires student-athletes to have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 entering the season. Athletic accomplishment standards vary between team sports and individual sports. For track & field, student-athletes are required to be a top-three finisher at the conference championship meet. Team size for individual sports is determined by the number of all-conference honorees who possess the minimum academic requirement. Freshman are not eligible for the All-Academic Team.
