Wilmington, Del--The UMBC women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to six straight, as they nipped host Delaware, 4-3 on Tuesday. The men bounced back from a tough 4-3 loss to Navy by defeating the Blue Hens, 5-2.

After winning two of three matches to take the doubles point, freshman Alice Chen and sophomore Cornelia Carapcea pulled out three-set wins in singles and senior Adriana Fonseca won in straight sets to give the Retrievers a split of singles and the match. Chen dropped the first set to Elena Berry, 4-6, but won two tight sets, 7-6 (5), 7-5 to prevail at No. 1 singles. Carapcea won the first set, 6-1, over Alexa Dragonette, but lost a second-set tie-breaker. She recovered to take the decided set, 6-3.

Fonseca defeated Brittany Barsky, 6-3, 6-2 as UMBC improved to 10-4 on the season.

On the men’s side, UMBC swept the three double matches and won four of the six singles contests. No. 4 Fredi Voorman dominated Sam Barrer, 6-2, 6-0 and No. 6 Fernando Ferreira did the same against Camilo Perez, 6-0, 6-2. No. 1 junior Irfan Shamasdin lost just four games, defeating Nolan Greenberg, 6-3, 6-1, while No. 3 junior David Jackson continued his outstanding play, edging Matthew Liebman, 6-2, 7-6 (2).
