TENNIS TEAMS BOTH BOW TO BINGHAMTON IN AMERICA EAST SEMI-FINALS

New Haven, Conn.—Both the UMBC men’s and women’s tennis teams dropped semi-final matches to Binghamton at the America East Championships. The men fell, 4-1, while the women were edged, 4-2, by the Bearcats.

 

On the men’s side, only #4 Irfan Shamasdin was able to pull off a UMBC win,  defeating Aurelio Martinez 6-3, 6-1.

 

The women nearly pulled off the upset, as #1 Ale Pedergnana and Cornelia Carapcea won their doubles match, 8-2. UMBC lost at #2 doubles, and #3 Adriana Fonseca and Pascaline Cette were edged, 9-7, as Binghamton won the doubles point.

 

Pedergnana and Cette each won singles matches, as top-seeded Pedergnana topped Juliana Umeki, 6-1, 6-2 and fifth-seeded Cette won 2-6, 6-0, 6-0. Second-seeded Carapcea and fourth-seeded Elizabeth Anderson each won their first sets, but both fell in three sets. Carapcea lost to Zenyep Altinay, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, while Anderson fell, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6. Sixth-seeded Fonseca lost a tough two-set match, 6-2, 7-6.
