PEDERGNANA SHINES AS WOMEN'S TENNIS CLOSES WEEK WITH 5-2 WIN OVER STONY BROOK

Vestal, N.Y.—The women’s tennis team defeated Stony Brook, 5-2, on Sunday to improve to 6-10 on the season and 6-3 since opening the season with seven consecutive setbacks. UMBC dropped a 5-2 decision to Binghamton on Saturday. The men’s team (7-10) dropped a 5-2 decision to Binghamton and a 7-0 match to Stony Brook. No. 1 Ale Pedergnana (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) continued her outstanding play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sandy Wijeratme. The senior extended her winning streak to nine straight in singles and is now 11-4 #1 singles and 8-4 at #1 doubles this spring. Her 19 wins this spring give her 96 in her career. Pedergnana had recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win over Binghamton’s Julianna Umeki on Saturday. After dropping the doubles point, UMBC won the first five singles matches to claim the victory. No. 2 Cornelia Carapcea defeated Hana Chovanova, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, No. 3 Joy Adewumi edged Erica Federgreen, 5-7, 7-2, 6-2, No. 4 Elizabeth Anderson got past Monica Myers, 6-0, 6-4, and No. 5 Pascaline Cette defeated Victoria Vovsha, 6-2, 7-5. Pedergnana and Carapcea recorded singles victories on Saturday vs. host Binghamton and the duo combined for a 8-2 win over Jenn Naegeli and Jenela Koprivica. No. 4 Irfan Shamasdin and No. 6 Mehrban Iranshad captured UMBC’s singles victories over Binghamton, with Shamasdin defeating Aurelio Martinez, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Iranshad edging Mark Piro, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (9). The No. 1 doubles team of David Jackson and Fernando Ferreria recorded an 8-5 win over Richemn Mourad and Martinez.
