WOMEN'S TENNIS UPENDS GEORGE MASON, 5-2

3/9/2006

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC women’s tennis team (1-7) won its first match of the year in the home opener as the injury-riddled Retrievers defeated George Mason, 5-2.

UMBC won all four singles matches that it competed in, as the Retrievers defaulted at #5 and #6 singles. Top-seeded senior Ale Pedergnana evened her spring record at 4-4 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Maricel Ballester. UMBC won the other three singles matches in straight sets—No. 2 freshman Cornelia Carapcea defeated Jenn Dektas, 6-1, 6-1, No. 3 freshman Joy Adewumi defeated Julie Moscato, 6-1, 6-1, and junior Elizabeth Anderson shutout Alicia Van Zandt, 6-0, 6-0.

That foursome combined to win both doubles matches to give the Retrievers the doubles point. Pedergnana and Carapcea defeated Ballester and Van Zandt at No. 1 doubles, 8-1, and Adewumi and Anderson edged Dektas and Moscato, 8-6.

The Retrievers return to action on March 13 when they host Towson.
