The women fell to 0-7 with tough losses to Bucknell (4-3) and Temple (5-2)…senior Ale Pedergnana (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) is a solid 3-4 at singles and 4-2 with partner Cornelia Carapcea (Constanta, Romania) at #1 doubles…Pedergnana now has 84 career victories for UMBC…freshman Emily Portner (Tuscon, Ariz./University) recorded her first career win with a three-set (6-1, 3-6, 6-3) win at #5 singles over Temple’/s Eva Marsalkova…freshman Debbie Lin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson), who walked onto the team this spring, earned her first win, a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Temple’s Karina Collamen at #6 singles…six of UMBC’s 11 players have missed matches due to injury, with several starters (Adriana Fonseca, Gabi Furdyna, Pascaline Cette, Joanna Woo) currently still on the shelf…starting with today’s home-opening match vs. George Mason, UMBC’s next eight matches (excluding spring break) will be at home. The men fell to 3-5 with a 5-2 loss at Bucknell…senior James Tyler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Syracmore) and sophomore Irfan Shamasdin (Ontario, Canada/Dumbarton) won at #3 and #4 singles respectively…sophomores Lief Hollowell (Derwood, Md./Magruder) and Fernando Ferreira (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Anglo Americana) won UMBC’s lone doubles match, at #3 doubles, 8-6…freshman Nick Savage-Pollock (Montreal, Quebec/St. Thomas) leads the squad with a 4-2 singles record and seven spring wins overall…the men play at American on Saturday before returning home for a dual match vs. Quinnipiac on Tuesday, March 14…Head Coach Keith Puryear needs four more victories to post 200 in his tenure with the men (196-166)…the Retriever mentor has 224 wins with the women’s program.
