2/21/2006

—The UMBC men’s tennis team (3-4) edged Boston University, 4-3, on Sunday, February 19. After dropping the doubles point, the Retrievers won four of six singles matches to capture the win.

The key victory by UMBC occurred at #4 singles as junior Mehrban Iranshad won a tough three-setter over Gulio Gallovalti. Iranshad won the first set, 7-5, dropped the second, 3-6, but came back for a 6-3 win in the decided set. Other singles winners for UMBC were No. 2 freshman Nick Savage-Pollock (6-1, 6-2), No. 3 sophomore Irfan Shamasdin (6-0, 6-4) and No. 6 sophomore Lief Hollowell (6-2, 6-3).

Iranshad and Savage-Pollock gave UMBC its lone doubles win, triumphing at the No. 3 slot, 8-4.

The injury-riddled women’s team (0-3) dropped a 7-0 decision to the Terriers, the eleven-time America East Champions. Starters Adriana Fonseca, Pascaline Cette and Gabi Furdyna remained sidelined with injuries, hence all four freshmen on Keith Puryear’s are in the current starting six. No. 4 Joy Adewumi gave Boston’s Laura Ahmes a tough battle before falling, 7-5. 6-4.
