TENNIS TEAMS POST OUTSTANDING RESULTS IN HAMPTON ROADS COLLEGIATE TENNIS INVITATIONAL

A pair of UMBC men’s doubles teams won their flights of the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational held this weekend in Newport News, Virginia.

 

Senior James Tyler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and freshman Nick Savage-Pollock (Montreal, Quebec/St. Thomas) won the “B” Flight Doubles with an 8-5 victory over Ditman/Levine of Delaware. In addition, senior Djan Gusmao (Novo Hamburgo, Brazil/Institute Evangelico) and junior Mehrban Iranshad  (Silver Spring ,Md./Springbrook) took the Men’s “D” Doubles flight with a 9-8 (4) win over James/Jones of Navy.  

 

Gusmao also performed well in “D” Singles, winning a pair of matches, before falling to Kyle Jones, of Navy, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarter-finals.

 

The women’s team had several outstanding performances as well. Freshman Joy Adewumi (Phoenix, AZ/North Canyon) made it to the finals of the Women’s C-2 singles competition before falling to Linda Garder of Old Dominion, 7-5, 7-5. In addition, classmate Cornelia Carapcea won three matches to advance to the semi-finals before falling to Alex de Guzman of William & Mary, 7-6, 6-2.
