FOUR RETRIEVER FRESHMEN EARN MEN'S TENNIS ALL CONFERENCE HONORS

4/29/2005

Four Retriever men’s tennis freshmen have been named to the America East Conference Second Team in a vote of the league’s coaches.

The UMBC players honored were Irfan Shamasdin (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Dunbarton), Fernando Ferreira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Anglo Americana), Lief Hollowell (Derwood, Md./Magruder) and David Jackson (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty). All four were inserted in the starting lineup by Head Coach Keith Puryear and have helped UMBC earn a #3 seed in this weekend’s conference championships to be held in New Haven, Connecticut.

Shamasdin earned his All Conference award at #2 singles, where he compiled a 8-1 record after climbing to that slot midway through the season. He was 12-6 overall in the spring in singles competition and led the team with 21 total victories.

Ferreria, Hollowell, and Jackson were selected at #4, #5, and #6 singles respectively.  Ferreria settled in at the #4 slot late in the season, compiling a 2-2 record there, after winning 7 of 11 singles matches at the #3 position. Hollowell (2-3, #5, 8-9 overall) and Jackson (2-1, #6, 10-8 overall) also moved down one spot each with the return of injured Mike Keller to the lineup at #3 in the in final weeks of the campaign.

Both the men’s (9-10) and women’s team’s (11-8) are the #3 seeds in this weekend’s tournament. The men take on #6 New Hampshire today at 1pm, while the women face #6 Albany at 10 a.m. The women, last year’s tournament runner-up, enter play with wins in 8 of their last 9 matches.
