Freshman Fernando Ferreira combined with senior James Tyler to win a key doubles point, then won the clinching singles match as UMBC (6-8) defeated Villanova, 4-3, on Thursday.
Ferreira and Tyler improved to 4-0 at #2 doubles with a 9-7 win over Sean Gallagher and Dimitri Chimerakus. UMBC had split the first two doubles matches, as senior Albert Hardja and junior Djan Gusmao triumphed, 8-5, at #3 doubles, raising their record as a tandem to 3-0. #1 team David Jackson and Irfan Shamasdin, a pair of freshmen, fell 9-7.
Jackson and Shamasdin won their singles matches at #5 and #2 respectively, with Shamasdin defeating Ricardo Baraldi, 7-5, 6-4. Baraldi is the brother of UMBC alum Luis Baraldi.
