Philadelphia, PA—Senior Josef Novotny won the 2003 Penn Tennis Classic, held this past weekend at Penn’s Levy Pavilion.

Novotny, the #1 seed, dropped just one set to capture the title. He opened with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Radford’s Arthur Vasarevic, and then defeated Manhattan’s Diego Alvarado, 6-3, 7-6 (4). He faced his toughest challenge in the quarters, where he prevailed over Columbia’s Rajeev Emany, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Novotny then breezed through the semis and finals with wins over Mikhail Bekker of Penn, 6-1, 6-2, and #2 seed Jimmy Moore of Columbia, 6-1, 6-3.

Novotny improved his fall ledger to 16-1, and is now 64-13 in his two-plus seasons at UMBC. Earlier this season, he was the champion at the Cornell Invitational, co-champion at the D.C. Metro Classic and a semi-finalist at the ITA Regional Championships.
