UMBC head tennis coach Rob Hubbard appointed Doug Neagle as assistant tennis coach shortly after he accepted the position to mentor the Retriever men’s and women’s teams.
Neagle, a United States Professional Tennis Association certified teaching pro, is the current head professional at the Suburban Club in Pikesville, Md., a position he has held since August of 2006. The Maryland native and Gambrills, Md. resident has coached at the Severn School (1999-2004), the United States Naval Academy (1998-99) and Pomona-Pitzer (Cal.) Colleges (1997-98).
At Severn, he guided the men’s and women’s varsity teams to a pair of MIAA championships in five seasons. As associate head men’s tennis coach at Navy, Neagle had responsibilities in all phases of the program and helped the Midshipmen to a Patriot League title and its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in the spring of 1999.
He served as the head men’s tennis coach at Pomona-Pitzer (NCAA Division III) and led a young team to a national ranking of No. 12 during the 1997-98 campaign.
Neagle was an accomplished student-athlete during his four years at Salisbury University, and was a 2008 SU Sports Hall of Fame inductee. He was a two-time All American in singles and doubles, finishing eighth in the country in singles and 12th in doubles in 1996, and improving to fifth in singles and fourth in doubles in his senior season of 1997.
Neagle earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Salisbury in 1997. He competed professionally on the French satellite tour in the summer of 1997.
