UMBC MEN LEAD AFTER DAY ONE OF ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS; WOMEN IN SECOND

Pittsburgh, PA - The UMBC men's swimming and diving team are in first place with 187 points after the first day of the 2003 ECAC Championships. They are trailed closely by Seton Hall and Marist with 155 and 148 points, respectively. The Retriever women, who amassed 106 points after twelve events, are in second place behind Boston College.

Junior Brad Green led UMBC as he captured first place in the 50-yd. freestyle with a time of 20.67. Green was also a part of the 400 medley relay team that took second place (3:25.38), as well as the 200 freestyle relay team that placed third (1:24.64). Other notable swimmers on the men's side included Carlos Canepa, who finished third in the 500 freestyle (4:34.18), Jakub Sroczynski, who was fourth in the same event, and Josh Farley, who took fourth in the 200 individual medley.

On the women's side, the 400 medley relay team gathered the most points by capturing gold with a time of 3:52.10. Members included juniors Astrid Sperling and Holly Wittsack, sophomore Lindsay Prather, and freshman Elyse Gibson. Sperling also grabbed silver in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.32.

MEN - 200 Free Relay: Erb, Farley, Sroczynski, Green (3rd-1:24.64); 500 Free: Carlos Canepa (3rd-4:34.18), Jakub Sroczynski (4th-4:34.71); 200 IM: Josh Farley (4th-1:52.21), Karl Strauss (6th-1:55.23), David Landgren (8th-1:55.65); 50 Free: Brad Green (1st-20.67); 3m Diving: Jon Gdowik (6th-370.30); 400 Medley Relay: Sroczynski, Szabo, Strauss, Green (2nd-3:25.38)
