UMBC STILL LEADS AFTER SECOND DAY OF NEC SWIMMING & DIVING

Baltimore, MD – The UMBC women’s and men’s teams combined to take first place in 11 of 16 events to extend their lead in the second day of the Northeast Conference Championships and NEC Invitational, respectively. On the women’s side, the Retrievers now have a total of 652 points, while Wagner kept their second-place spot with 435, and Central Connecticut State stayed in third with 305 points. On the men’s side, UMBC leads with 759, and its closest competitor, Howard, has 366.

Three meet records were broken today, the first being the women’s 400 individual medley, as CCSU’s Tammie Repass finished with a time of 4:24.12. UMBC’s Astrid Sperling followed with a record-breaking 58.10 in the 100 backstroke, and CCSU’s lone diver, Juliana DiPlacido, won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 414.55.

Individual winners for UMBC included Holly Wittsack in the 100 butterfly, Amber Harris in the 200 freestyle, Lindsay Prather in the 100 breaststroke, David Landgren in the 400 IM, Geza Szabo in the 100 butterfly, Josh Farley in the 200 freestyle, and Jon Gdowik in 3-meter diving. The Retrievers also captured the top spots in the women’s 200 medley relay, and both the men’s and women’s 800 freestyle relay.

First-place finishers for the remaining schools were Shawn Pouchet of St. Francis (NY) in the 100 breaststroke (58.90) and Howard’s Ian Perry-Okpara in the 100 backstroke (52.70). The Howard Sharks also won the men’s 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.36.
