UMBC LEADS AFTER DAY ONE OF NEC SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Baltimore, MD - The UMBC women's swim team captured the lead in the 2003 Northeast Conference Championships, while the Retriever men took the top spot in the NEC Invitational after one day of competition at the UMBC Natatorium. After six events, the UMBC women have a score of 297, with the closest competitor being Wagner with a score of 213. On the men's side, the Retrievers have 392, while Howard and St. Francis (NY) trail, with 173 and 129, respectively.

Host UMBC gained ground over their competition by sweeping both the 200 yard individual medley and the 400 medley relay races. In the 200 IM, junior Astrid Sperling captured first place with a time of 2:08.06, while junior Josh Farley won the men's race with a time of 1:56.31. Freshman Geza Szabo also won an individual event for UMBC, taking the top spot in the 500 freestyle at 4:39.89.

Leading the Howard men’s team were Erik Binga and Afolabi Adeleke-Adedoyin, who both tied for first place in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.69. The Shark men’s team also won the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of Adeleke-Adedoyin, Binga, Ian Perry-Okpara, and Olufolahan Oluwole finished with a time of 1:26.06.

Other individual winners for the day included Central Connecticut State’s Tammie Repass in the 500 freestyle (4:56.14) and Catherine Dale of St. Francis (NY) in the 50 freestyle (24.14). In 1-meter diving, CCSU’s Juliana Diplacido captured first with 194.85, while St. Francis (NY)’s Hugo Salazar won on the men’s side with a score of 194.85.
