UMBC SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS RECORD WINS OVER MASSACHUSETTS, WOMEN DEFEAT CCSU

Amherst, MA - The Retriever men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted victories over Massachusetts today, as the men won, 180-118, and the women dominated, 171-128. The Central Connecticut women's team also participated in the meet, and fell to UMBC, 180-96. With the dual meet victories, the men improved to 5-2 on the season, while the women vaulted to 6-2.

The Retrievers broke several pool records during the competition, including a time of 1:52.04 turned in by freshman Geza Szabo in the 200 butterfly. On the women's side, junior Astrid Sperling shattered the records in both the 100 backstroke (58.54) and the 200 backstroke (2:03.28). The UMBC 400 medley relay team of Sperling, Lindsey Prather, Holly Wittsack, and Elyse Gibson also broke the pool record with a time of 3:56.67.

Sperling also won first place in the 200 individual medley, as the UMBC women combined to take the top spot in 12 of 16 events. Other first place finishers included Gibson (50 free, 100 free), Prather (100 breast, 200 breast), and Wittsack (100 fly, 200 fly).

On the men's side, the UMBC team won first place in 13 or 16 events, including Josh Farley (100 free, 200 IM), Brad Green (50 free, 100 back), Jakub Sroczynski (200 free, 200 back), senior captain Karl Strauss (100 breast, 200 breast), and Szabo (100 fly, 200 fly).
