BALTIMORE—The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving team travel to Boston this weekend to compete at the America East Championships, hosted by Boston University, starting Thursday. The men have won five straight America East Crowns and 11 consecutive conference titles, while the women have won two straight titles.

Senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) looks to lead the men, after breaking the 500 free UMBC record earlier this year. Bronson holds the top UMBC times in four events, including the 100 free, 200 free and 100 fly. Fellow seniors Evan Roseberry (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic) hold the top times in the 1,650 free and the 100 back, respectively.

Youth has also been a big part of the Retriever success, with sophomores Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard)claiming the top times in the 50 free and 200 fly, respectively. Freshman John Mendenhall (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) holds the top time in both the 100 and 200 breast, while fellow first-year Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) leads the Retrievers in the 200 back.

On the women’s side, junior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) holds the UMBC top times in four events, including the 100 back, both breast events and the 200 IM. Fellow junior Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) holds the top times in both fly events, including the second fastest UMBC time in the 200 fly of all-time.

Senior Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) has been one of the most decorated swimmers in Retriever history, and will look to finish strong, after posting the top time in the 500 free. Junior transfer Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) has made a big impact in her first season in Baltimore, turning in four all-time top 10 times, including the 50, 100, 200 and 1,000 free events.

The action gets started Thursday at 5 p.m. with 1-meter men’s diving, the 800 free relays and the 200 medley relays.
