UMBC Swimming and Diving Controls Marist Saturday on Senior Day

    Senior Joy Wilde was one of nine seniors recognized before the meet against Marist on Saturday.

    BALTIMORE-The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won 25 out of 32 events Saturday as the men defeated Marist 162-127, while the women defeated the Red Foxes 169-120. With the wins the Retriever men moved to 4-3-1 on the season, while the women improved to 4-6.

     

    Junior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) earned three golds on the day in the 200 and 500 free and the leadoff in the 200 free relay team. Her time of 1:51.71 in the 200 free was the fastest UMBC time this season and fourth fastest in school history.

     

    Junior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) showed off her versatility against the Red Foxes, winning the 100 back in 1:00.13, the 200 breast in 2:24.83 and the 200 individual medley in 2:10.03. She was also a part of the first place 200 medley relay team that finished in a time of 1:50.72.

     

    Sophomore Erin Wohlers (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) earned two individual wins in the 50 and 100 free events in 25.20 and 54.43, respectively. Junior Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) took the 100 fly, while sophomore Gaby Johnston (Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) won the 100 breast and freshman Laura Tilman (Miami Springs, Fla./Ransom Everglades) finished first in the 200 back.

     

    On the men’s side, senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) won three events against the Red Foxes including the 100 fly in 51.78 and the 200 free in 1:42.19. He also led off the 200 free relay team that finished first in 1:25.17.

     

    Sophomore Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) was a three time winner including the 50 and 100 free events and the 200 free relay.  Junior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) won the 100 breast in 59.03 and was a part of the 200 medley relay team that finished first in 1:35.13. Freshman Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) swept the 100 and 200 backstroke events with times of 53.29 and 1:55.13, respectively.

     

    Sophomore Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) won the 200 fly and 200 IM, while freshman John Mendenhall (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) took the 200 breast.

     

    Senior Evan Roseberry (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) won the 1,000 free in 9:47.02 in his last home meet as a Retriever as the nine seniors were recognized before the meet started. Roseberry and Bronson were celebrated, along with Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic), Christina Ng (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge), Freddie Reitz, (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) Sven Schneider (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn German Gymnasium), P.J. Sterba (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson), Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) and Joy Wilde (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) for all of their efforts the past four years.

     

    The Retrievers return to action Saturday for their final dual meet of the season at William and Mary at 1 p.m.
