UMBC Swimming and Diving Men Pull Away, Women Take Lead on Second Day of Patriot Invitational

    Senior Justin Bronson set a Patriot Invite record in the 200 free.

    FAIRFAX,Va.—The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took control on the second day of the George Mason Patriot Invitational, as the Retrievers set two new Patriot Invite records. The men now have a very-sizable lead with 816 points to second-place UNC-Wilmington’s 452. The women have taken over the lead from host George Mason, 558-515.

     

    Senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) set a Patriot Invite record in the 100 fly, winning the event in 49.51. Bronson also won gold in the 200 free in 1:40.26. The Retrievers went 1-2-3 in the 200 free with senior Freddie Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and sophomore Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) placing second and third, respectively.

     

    Bronson, Reitz and Jones were joined by senior Evan Roseberry (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) to set a new Patriot Invite record in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 6:46.02.

     

    On the women’s side, junior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) won silver in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.03, while juniors Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) and Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) earned silvers in the 200 free and 100 fly, respectively.

     

    Sunday is the final day of the Patriot Invitational with the preliminary session taking place at 9 a.m. and the finals starting at 5 p.m.
