Junior Tereza Kaplanova has qualified for two finals tonight at the Patriot Invitational.
FAIRFAX, Va.óThe UMBC menís and womenís swimming and diving teams have completed the second day of preliminary competition at the George Mason Patriot Invitational. The Retrievers will see 28 swims in the finals during tonightís session.
Senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) looks to continue a record-setting weekend a day after breaking the 500 free school record on Friday night. Bronson is seeded first in both the 100 fly and 200 free events. UMBC will be very deep in the 200 free as the Dawgs will occupy seven out of the eight spots in the final. In addition, three Retrievers will join Bronson in the 100 fly finals.
Freshman John Mendenhall (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) will be seeded first in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 400 IM. Freshman Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and sophomore Kregg Deery (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek) will join Mendenhall in the 100 breast final and sophomore Mat Carson (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute) and senior Evan Roseberry (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) will join him in the 400 IM.
The men will also be well represented in the 100 back with seniors Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic) and Sven Schnieder (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn German Gymnasium) and freshman Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) all qualifying for the finals.
On the womenís side, junior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) qualified for two finals tonight, the 100 breast and the 100 back. Kaplanova will be joined in the 100 breast by sophomore Gaby Johnston (Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) and in the 100 back by freshman Abbey McKinney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine).
The Retrievers are seeded second, third and fourth in the 200 free, led by junior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee). Junior Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) will be the lone UMBC entrant in the 100 fly finals, while sophomore Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) will compete for the Retrievers in the 400 IM.
The Retrievers will also field relay teams in the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays tonight with the competition scheduled to kick off at 6:00 p.m.
