BALTIMORE—The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Binghamton Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Natatorium. The men (2-2) defeated the Bearcats (0-2), 170-125, while the women (3-3) downed Binghamton (0-3) by a score of 177-113. The Retrievers set 11 season-best times as a team on the day.

Senior Evan Roseberry (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) led the Retrievers with three wins. He set a UMBC season-best time in the 1,000 free (9:42.85) and also won the 200 fly (1:56.84) and the 500 free (4:44.44).

Sophomore Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) swept the sprint events with a pair of season-best times, taking the 50 free in 21.81 and the 100 free in 46.78. Junior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) also set two season bests with victories in the 100 breast (59.46) and the 200 IM (1:56.60).

In addition, junior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) won both the 200 free (1:45.58) and the 100 fly (52.42).

Other winners for the Retriever men included freshman Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) in the 200 back (1:54.01), a UMBC season best, and freshman John Mendenhall (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) in the 200 breast (2:09.53).

In addition, the 400-free relay team of sophomore Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta/Argyll Centre), Jones, Bronson and freshman Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) won in 3:09.15, while the 200-medley relay team of senior Sven Schneider (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn German Gymnasium), Matt Mattingly, junior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy) and Jason Mattingly placed second in a season-best 1:36.15.

Finally, senior Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic) set a season-best in the 100-back at 53.60 while finishing second, while sophomore Daniel Grippi (Voorhees, N.J./Easton) set season-best marks in both diving events, scoring 213.23 on the 1-meter board and 206.55 on the 3-meter board.

On the women’s side, sophomore Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and junior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) won two events apiece. Godwin swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100-breast in 1:09.65 and the 200-breast in 2:30.91, while Kaplanova took the 200-back in a season-best 2:09.24 and the 200 IM in a season-best 2:09.55.

Sophomore diver Amanda Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md./Springbrook) took home her first career win in the 3-meter with a season-best mark of 209.78 while placing second on the 1-meter board with a score of 189.15.

Other winners for the Retriever women included sophomore Cassie Dobrzanski (Maugansville, Md./North Hagerstown) in the 1,000-free (10:46.64), junior Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) in the 200-free (1:56.60), freshman Kelsey Fitzpatrick (Delran, N.J./Delran) in the 100-back (1:02.45), sophomore Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) in the 200-fly (2:10.23), senior Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) in the 50-free (25.46), junior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) in the 100-free (53.60), freshman Pink Kinanti (Jakarta, Indonesia/The Bolles School) in the 500-free (5:13.41) and sophomore Gaby Johnston (Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) in the 100 fly (1:00.58).

In addition, the Retrievers swept the relays, as the 200-medley relay team of freshman Laura Tilman (Miami Springs, Fla./Ransom Everglades), Kaplanova, Sherman and Maccherola won in 1:51.40 and the 400-free relay team of Maccherola, Surkovich, Ryan and Sherman won in 3:39.21.

The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 15, when they travel to College Park, Md., to take on in-state rivals Maryland and Towson at 1 p.m.
