Junior Tereza Kaplanova swept the breaststroke events Saturday against Rider.

BALTIMORE—The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their home dual meet schedule Saturday, with both teams defeating Rider 161-137 at the UMBC Natatorium. The men improved to 1-1 and the women to 1-2 on the season.

Senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) wow three events on the men’s side, including the 100, 200 and 500 free. His 500 free time of 4:43.49 was a UMBC season best.

Senior Evan Roseberry (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) was a two-time winner Saturday, winning the 200 fly in 1:56.58, while setting a UMBC season best 9:43.79 in the 1,000 free.

The Retrievers swept the breaststroke events with junior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) winning the 100 in a time of 1:00.23 and freshman John Mendenhall (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) taking the 200, with a time of 2:10.14.

The 400 free relay team of freshmen Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel), Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), junior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy) and Bronson took the last event of the day in a time of 3:10.16.

On the women’s side, junior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, with times of 1:07.94 and 2:23.02, respectively.

Sophomore Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) swept the distance freestyle events, winning the 500 in 5:12.75 and the 1,000 in 10:22.47, a new UMBC season-best time.

Junior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) was the only other individual winner for the Retrievers, taking the 200 free in a time of 1:55.90. The 400 free relay of senior Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake), sophomore Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside), Maccherola and freshman Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach) finished first in a time of 3:35.49 to clinch the victory for UMBC.

The Retrievers return to action Saturday, Oct. 25, when they travel to Navy. The women’s meet will start at noon, while the men’s meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
