UMBC Swimming and Diving Open Home Dual Meet Schedule Saturday Against Rider

10/17/2008

Sophomore Rebecca Godwin broke a Coppola Pool record in the 1,000 free at Rider last year.

BALTIMORE—The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams begin their 2008-09 home dual meet season Saturday as they play host to Rider at 12 p.m.

Last year against Rider, both teams opened the 2007-08 with wins as the men won 170-125, while the women defeated the Broncs 165-134.

The women set four Coppola Pool records in the contest, with junior Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) taking two--in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Freshman Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) turned in a record-setting performance in the 1000 freestyle, while junior Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake), freshman Erin Wohlers (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker), and seniors Carly Fitzpatrick (Delran, N.J./Delran) and Lindsey Engler (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) combined to set a new record in the 400 free relay.

The Retrievers look to bounce back after suffering defeats in their first dual meets of the season at NC State last Saturday. Senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) and junior Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) were the only individual winners for UMBC in the 200 free and 200 fly, respectively.
