UMBC Swimming and Diving Picked to Finish First in America East, Open Dual Meet Season at N.C. State Saturday

10/10/2008

Head Coach Chad Cradock will lead the UMBC swimming and diving teams into their first competition of 2008-09 on Saturday.

BALTIMOREThe UMBC swimming and diving team have its first scored meet of the season at N.C. State on Saturday at 1 p.m. The women’s team will also face Miami in a double-dual meet. Both the men’s and women’s teams have been picked to finish first in the America East preseason poll, as announced by the conference on Oct. 9.

The men were the unanimous decision (coaches were unable to vote for their own team) with four first place votes and 16 total points.  Winning a close battle for second is the Boston University, who received the remaining first-place vote and a total of 13 points, setting them a point ahead of third-place Binghamton (12 points).  Stony Brook is seeded in fourth place with seven points, holding off fifth-place Maine with four points.

On the women’s side, coaches are projecting a dog fight with the Boston University Terriers (32 points, two first-place votes) nipping at the heels of the defending Retrievers (35 points, four first place votes), trailing them by only three points in the poll.  New Hampshire (24) was picked to finish third, just edging past Vermont (23) in fourth, with Maine (15), Binghamton (11) and Stony Brook (7) rounding out the league.

The Retrievers opened their season last Saturday against Bucknell, in a non-scored meet. UMBC won 34 out of the 40 events, including a sweep of all the relays.
