CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams earned three out of the four weekly conference awards as freshmen Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), Crystal Gall (Balgonie, Saskatchewan, Canada/Dr. Martin LeBoldus), and Mike Morabito (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) were named performers of the week for the week ending Nov. 12, the conference announced Tuesday.
Reitz picked up the Men’s Swimming Performer of the Week honor after tallying four wins in the Retrievers’ victory over Towson on Saturday. Reitz turned in winning times of 51.89 and 1:57.06 in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events and also swam legs on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, which recorded times of 1:36.54 and 3:10.99, respectively. Reitz is unbeaten in the 100 butterfly this season, recording first place finishes on four different occasions.
Gall earned the Women’s Diving Performer of the Week accolade for the second time this season as she swept the diving events in the Retrievers’ loss to Towson last week. Gall posted scores of 246.07 and 254.55 on the 1- and 3-meter boards, respectively. She picked up her first weekly award after the first week of competition, where she swept the diving events in the Retrievers’ unscored meet against Bucknell.
Morabito added the final decoration of the week, earning the Men’s Diving Performer of the Week award after posting a score of 216.15 on the 1-meter board to win the event against Towson, and recording a season-best score of 220.88 on the 3-meter to finish second.
Vermont’s Katie Weaver earned the final weekly award, the Women’s Swimming Performer of the Week.
The Retrievers have combined for a total of seven of the 16 total awards given out so far this year, with junior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) earning two weekly awards and freshman Seth McNew (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) earning one.
