UMBC Swimming and Diving Drops Second Straight to Conference Rival New Hampshire

    Junior Daniele Surkovich won the 100 and 200 freestyles against New Hampshire on Saturday.

    DURHAM, N.H.—The UMBC women’s swimming and diving teams dropped their second straight meet, as they fell to America East conference-foe New Hampshire, 156-142 on Sunday at Swasey Pool.

     

    With the loss the Retrievers fall to 1-2 on the season, totaling more losses in their first three meets of the 2007-08 than they finished with in the 2006-07 season (10-1 record), while the Wildcats improve to 4-0 on the season.

     

    The Retrievers are beginning to feel their losses in the diving events, as they outscored the Wildcats 132-128 in the pool, but were outscored, 28-10 on the boards.

     

    Junior Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) led the Retrievers, notching three victories, two individual and one relay, on the day.  Surkovich touched first in the 100 (53.25) and 200 (1:53.17) freestyle events, and teamed with freshmen Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) and Erin Wohlers (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) and senior Lindsey Engler (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) to win the 400 free relay with a time of 3:37.02.  Engler also added a win in the 50 free with a time of 24.74.

     

    Freshman Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) remains unbeaten in the 1000 free as she turned in a winning time of 10:15.13 for her third straight win in the event and also added a win in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.92.

     

    The only other individual winner for the Retrievers was junior Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) who turned in a time of 2:20.37 in the 200 breaststroke.

     

    Both the men’s and women’s teams will take on another conference-foe, this time Binghamton, as they travel to Vestal, N.Y. on Saturday, Nov. 3 for a 1:00 p.m. meet against the Bearcats.
