UMBC Swimming and Diving Falls to Navy in First Home Meet

    Sophomore Rasmus Kutt was the only double-winner for the men's team as he won the 200 back and led-off the 400 medley relay on Saturday.

    BALTIMORE—The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dropped their first meet of the season, as they fell to Navy by scores of 137-101 on the men’s side and 123-119 on the women’s.  The Retrievers fall to 1-1 on the season for both men and women, while the Midshipmen improve to 5-0 on both sides.

     

    Junior Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) led a Retrievers sweep of the 200 breaststroke as she turned in a winning time of 2:20.79 to give the Retrievers a 115-110 lead over the Midshipmen going into the last event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay.

     

    In a riveting contest, Sarah Dorenkott from Navy just out-touched senior Retriever anchor Lindsey Engler (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) to give Navy the event and meet win.  The Mids finished the race with a time of 3:33.00, while the Retrievers turned in a 3:33.62.

     

    Earlier in the meet, Engler took an individual win as she swam a time of 24.28 to win the 50 free.  The only other individual winners for the Retrievers were sophomore Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho), who won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:09.25, and freshman Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep), who was victorious in the 1000 free with a time of 10:20.67.

     

    On the men’s side, sophomore Rasmus Kutt (Tallinn, Estonia/Gustav Adolf Gymnasium) led the Retrievers as he claimed the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:54.49 and led-off the winning 400 medley relay comprised of senior Scott Auchter (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson), freshman Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), and sophomore Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) that turned in a time of 3:31.77.

     

    The only other individual winner for the Retrievers was junior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) who won the 200 free in a time of 1:42.30.

     

    The Retriever women will travel to Durham, N.H. on Sunday to face the New Hampshire Wildcats at 2:30 p.m., while both teams will face Binghamton on Sat. Nov. 3 at 1:00 p.m. in Vestal, N.Y.
