UMBC Swimming and Diving Sweeps East Carolina

    Meghan Sackett won two events and swam on the relay that captured the meet for the Retrievers.

    Greenville, N.C.-The UMBC women’s swimming and diving team did something Saturday afternoon it’s never done before – defeated East Carolina. The meet came down to the last event, the 400-free relay, which the Retrievers (9-1) took by five-tenths of a second to win the meet, 119-118. The UMBC men (6-1) won by a score of 134-103.

     

    Senior Agnes Stanislawska and junior Meghan Sackett paced the Retriever women with two wins apiece, as Stanislawska took the 200-IM (2:06.90) and the 200-back (2:05.39), and Sackett swept the distance events with times of 5:01.42 in the 500-free and 10:16.90 in the 1,000-free.

     

    Other winners for the Retriever women included sophomore Daniele Surkovich in the 200-free (1:54.18), senior diver Ashley Houghton on the 3-meter board (252.00) and sophomore Tina Cantwell in the 200-breast (2:19.58). Sackett and Surkovich also teamed with junior Lindsey Engler and freshman Lindsay Sherman to win the 400-free relay in 3:33.57.

     

    Sophomore Justin Bronson and senior Jeff Salgado were the only multiple winners on the men’s side, as Bronson took the 100-free (47.05) and the 200-free (1:42.83), and Salgado swept the diving events with scores of 292.13 on the 1-meter board and 300.00 in the 3-meter competition.

     

    Other winners for the Retriever men included sophomore Evan Roseberry in the 1,000-free (9:39.93), senior Tim Conway in the 50-free (21.61), freshman Rasmus Kutt in the 200-back (1:51.09) and senior Ryan Karrer in the 500-free (4:42.57). Bronson and Conway also teamed with junior Adam Eiben and senior Juan Ortiz to win the 400-free relay in 3:09.70.

     

    The Retrievers return home on Saturday, Jan. 27, hosting Marist on Senior Day at 12 p.m.
