Swimming and Diving Back in Action Sunday at Bucknell

12/1/2006

Daniele Surkovich broke her own school record in the 50-free at the George Mason Invitational.

Baltimore-The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to the pool Sunday after a two-week hiatus, as they travel to Bucknell for a 12 p.m. meet. The Retriever men are 4-1 on the season, while the women are 6-1. Both teams are coming off wins at the George Mason Patriot Invitational Nov. 17-19.

Looking Back: The Retriever men dominated the Patriot Invite, scoring 1,037 points and defeating second-place UNC-Wilmington by 411.5 points. Sophomore Freddie Reitz broke head coach Chad Cradock’s 10-year-old school record in the 500-free, winning the event in 4:28.52, one-tenth of a second faster than Cradock’s previous mark. Sophomores Justin Bronson and Evan Roseberry won two events apiece, with Bronson taking the 200-free and 100-fly and Roseberry winning the 1,650-free and 200-fly. Junior Scott Auchter won the 200-breast for the UMBC men, who also took first in four out of five relays.

The women’s meet came down to the last event, the 400-free relay, which the Retrievers won for the 772-753 victory over runner-up Duke. The Retriever women were led by senior Agnes Stanislawska, who broke her own school record in the 200-IM with and NCAA consideration time of 2:03.74. In addition to the 200-IM, Stanislawska also won the 100-breast and 200-back. Senior Ashley Houghton won the 3-meter diving competition, and sophomores Daniele Surkovich and Tina Cantwell took the 100-free and 200-breast, respectively. The UMBC women also won three of five relays, and Surkovich broke her own school record in the 50-free with her leadoff split of 23.74 in the 200-free relay.

On the Bison: The Bucknell men are 3-1 on the season, while the women are 1-2-1 overall. Both teams placed second at the Bucknell Trials/Finals Invitational Nov. 18-19. Bradford Bennett earned a Patriot League Honorable Mention Performance at the meet after winning the 100-breast and entering the program’s top-10 list in the 200-breast. Laura Goeller won the 200-back for the Bison women, and Kelly Morris swam Bucknell’s fifth-fastest time ever in the 200-breast. The Bison women won the 2006 Patriot League Championships, while the men placed third.

Last Time vs. Bucknell: The Retrievers swept the Bison on Dec. 3, 2005 at the UMBC Natatorium. The Retriever men defeated Bucknell, 142-94, while the women by a score of 141-94. Both teams won all but one event, and Jeff Salgado broke his own school 1-meter diving record and also won the 3-meter competition. Ryan Karrer was the only other multiple winner for UMBC, as he swept the distance events. Other winners for the Retriever men included Justin Bronson in the 200-free, Tim Conway in the 50-free, Adam Blais in the 200-IM, Geza Szabo in the 200-fly, Milos Djukic in the 200-back and Scott Auchter in the 200-breast. UMBC also swept the relays. Ian Rawhauser won the 100-free for Bucknell’s only victory on the day. The Retriever women were led by Meghan Sackett, who won three events, and Ashley Houghton, Daniele Surkovich and Agnes Stanislawska, who won two apiece. Lindsey Engler was the only other individual winner for UMBC, which also swept the relays. Lectie Altman won the 200-back for the Bison’s only victory on the day.

Records Falling: Four UMBC school records have been broken in the first month of the season. Senior diver Ashley Houghton broke her own school 1-meter diving record with a score of 281.48 at Towson on Nov. 11, besting her previous school mark of 273.59, which she set on Oct. 29, 2005 against Navy. The next weekend, the Retrievers broke three school records at the George Mason Patriot Invitational. Sophomore Freddie Reitz broke one of the oldest school records, the 500-free, which head coach Chad Cradock set in 1996. Reitz broke Cradock’s previous mark of 4:28.62 by one-tenth of a second, finishing in 4:28.52. Senior Agnes Stanislawska reset her own school record in the 200-IM with an NCAA consideration time of 2:03.74. Her original mark, which she set in 2003, was 2:03.47. Finally, sophomore Daniele Surkovich lowered her own school 50-free record with her leadoff split in the 200-free relay. Her time of 23.74 bested her previous mark of 23.99, which she set at the same meet a year ago.

Retrievers Ranked: Both UMBC teams are ranked in the top 10 in the CollegeSwimming.com Division-I Mid-Major Power Rankings. The men are ranked seventh with 167.87 points, just 0.95 points behind sixth-place Southern Illinois and only 4.1 points out of second place. Navy sits atop the poll with 180.63 points. The Retriever women are ranked eighth with 166.95 points, just nine-hundredths of a point behind seventh-place St. Louis and less than 10 full points behind first-place Harvard. In addition to Navy’s men leading he poll, other opponents on UMBC’s 2006-07 schedule are also ranked, including Navy’s women (2nd), George Mason’s women (9th) and men (19th), Binghamton’s men (12th), UNC-Wilmington’s men (14th) and women (18th), Towson’s women (15th) and men (18th) and Marist’s women (17th).

Cradock Reaches Milestone: UMBC head coach Chad Cradock notched his milestone 100th career victory when the Retrievers defeated Binghamton on Nov. 4. With 10 combined dual meet wins this season, Cradock now holds a combined record of 105-19 in six seasons at the helm, good for an .847 winning percentage. The UMBC men are 51-10 under Cradock, while the women are 52-15.

America East Recognizes Retrievers: A number of Retrievers have earned America East Performer of the Week awards this season. Most recently, senior Agnes Stanislawska earned her first Women’s Swimmer of the Week nod and senior Jeff Salgado garnered his third Men’s Diver of the Week honor after the George Mason Patriot Invitational. Senior Ashley Houghton has won two Women’s Diver of the Week awards, while sophomore Justin Bronson and junior Meghan Sackett have each earned one Swimmer of the Week honor this season.

Cantwell, Stanislawska Earn B Cuts: Sophomore Tina Cantwell became the second Retriever in as many seasons to achieve an NCAA Division-I consideration time with her time of 2:32.83 in the 200-meter breaststroke against Navy. Her time was nearly one full second under the standard of 2:33.63. Senior Agnes Stanislawska’s 2:03.74 in the 200-IM was also a consideration time, as it is nearly four-tenths of a second below the standard of 2:04.13. Meghan Sackett achieved ‘B’ cuts last year in the 500- and 1,650-free. The last Retriever to qualify for the NCAA Championships was Lindsey Prather in the 200-breast in 2001.

Divers Qualify for Zones: Both Jeff Salgado and Ashley Houghton have qualified for the NCAA Zone Regional diving competition, which will take place at Rutgers University March 2-4. Salgado qualified with a score of 308.40 on the 1-meter board against Rider, while Houghton achieved it with her scores of 270.52 on the 1-meter board at Navy and 280.28 on the 3-meter board against New Hampshire and Wagner.

Like It’s Our House: For the second year in a row, the Retrievers have broken pool records on the road. Last year it was at New Hampshire’s Swasey Pool; this season it was Navy’s Lejeune Hall. The UMBC team of senior Agnes Stanislawska, freshman Kate Chialastri, sophomore Tina Cantwell and junior Lindsey Engler bested the pool record in the 400-meter medley relay with their time of 4:23.89, six-hundredths of a second lower than the previous mark of 4:23.95. Cantwell also broke the pool record in the 200-breast but her mark will not stand as she was beaten in the event by Navy’s Mallory Dietrich, who won in 2:32.47. Both times shattered the previous pool record of 2:36.30.

Retriever Firsts: Several Retrievers have won the first events of their careers this season. All four of the freshmen on the women’s team grabbed their first career victories against Binghamton, as Kate Chialastri won the 200-fly, Brittany Johnson took the 500-free, Tereza Kaplanova won the 200-breast and Lindsay Sherman took the 200-free. On the men’s side, freshman Rasmus Kutt won the 200-back against the Bearcats for his first career win, while classmate Matt Mattingly accomplished the feat in the 50-free against Colgate. In addition, senior Pat Woodward won the 200-breast against the Raiders for the first victory of his career.
