UMBC Swimming and Diving Teams Maintain Lead on Day Two of George Mason Patriot Invitational

Justin Bronson won two events to lead the Retriever men on Day 2.

Agnes Stanislawska won the 100-back to lead the Retriever women on Day 2.

Fairfax, Va.-The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams maintained their leads on the second day of competition at the George Mason Patriot Invitational. The Retriever men have opened up a commanding lead with 694.5 points to second-place UNC-Wilmington’s 422, while the women hold a 511-495 lead over second-place Duke.

 

The 200-medley relay got the meet started on a high note for the Retriever men, as freshman Rasmus Kutt, junior Scott Auchter, sophomore Justin Bronson and senior Tim Conway teamed to win the event in 1:33.47.

 

Bronson later won both the 100-fly (49.83) and 200-free (1:40.69) as UMBC’s only individual winner on the men’s side, but the Retrievers also won the last event of the night, the 800-free relay. Bronson, sophomores Freddie Reitz and Evan Roseberry and senior Juan Ortiz missed the meet record by just eight-hundredths of a second with their time of 6:47.75. UMBC’s B relay of freshman Matt Mattingly, junior Adam Eiben, sophomore P.J. Sterba and senior Ryan Karrer also placed third in the event.

 

Roseberry took second in the 400-IM, while Mattingly and Reitz were runners-up to Bronson in the 100-fly and 200-free, respectively. Auchter also placed second in the 100-breast, while Kutt finished second in the 100-back.

 

Conway finaled in two events on the night, placing seventh in the 100-back and eighth in the 200-free. Other finalists for the Retriever men included Eiben, who placed seventh in the 400-IM and sophomore Milos Djukic, who came in fourth in the 100-back.

 

Senior Agnes Stanislawska led the way on the women’s side as the Retrievers’ only individual winner. She took the 100-breast in 1:04.38 and also placed second in the 100-back.

 

UMBC also won the 800-free relay, as sophomore Daniele Surkovich, Stanislawska and juniors Lindsey Engler and Meghan Sackett teamed for a time of 7:40.47.

 

Sophomore Tina Cantwell was runner-up to Stanislawska in the 100-breast and also placed third in the 400-IM. Surkovich finished second in the 100-fly and fifth in the 100-back, while Sackett placed second in the 200-free. Freshman Tereza Kaplanova came in fourth in the 400-IM and fifth in the 100-breast.

 

UMBC’s 200-medley relay of Stanislawska, Cantwell, Sackett and Engler led off the event with a fourth-place finish.

 

The meet concludes Sunday, with preliminaries beginning at 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
