Ashley Houghton broke her own school record in the 1-meter diving event.

Towson, Md.-Senior Ashley Houghton broke her own school 1-meter diving record and junior Meghan Sackett and senior Agnes Stanislawska each won three events for the second time in as many meets, leading the UMBC women’s swimming and diving team (6-1) to a 175-121 record over host Towson (4-3) Saturday afternoon at Burdick Hall. The Retriever men (4-1) also defeated the Tigers (2-5) by a score of 175-110.

Houghton won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 281.48, besting her own school mark of 273.59, which she set on Oct. 29, 2005 against Navy. Senior Katie Spohnholz placed second in the event with a score of 260.09, nearly 40 points better than her previous personal best (224.35). Houghton also won the 3-meter board with a score of 276.00.

Sackett won the 200-free (1:52.50), the 500-free (5:01.00) and the 1,000-free (10:23.01), posting season bests in the 200 and 500. Stanislawska took the 100-back (59.63), the 200-back (2:05.60) and the 200-IM (2:08.02).

Sophomores Tina Cantwell and Daniele Surkovich also won two events apiece for the Retrievers. Cantwell swept the breaststroke events with times of 1:05.37 in the 100 and 2:19.72 in the 200, while Surkovich won the 100-free in 53.31 and the 100-fly in 59.31.

The Retrievers also won the 200-medley relay in 1:49.61 with a team of Stanislawska, Cantwell, Surkovich and junior Lindsey Engler.

UMBC won 13 of 16 events and took the top three spots in the 200-breast and 200-IM. Jordan Crosby won the 200-fly and Aly Hunt won the 50-free for the Tigers, who also took first in the 400-free relay.

The Retriever men won 15 of 16 events as senior Jeff Salgado, junior Scott Auchter, sophomores Justin Bronson and Even Roseberry and freshman Rasmus Kutt each won two events. Salgado won both diving events for the third straight meet with scores of 250.87 on the 1-meter board and 283.13 on the 3-meter. Auchter swept the breaststroke events with times of 1:00.33 in the 100 and 2:13.23 in the 200, while Bronson won the 200-free (1:42.29) and 100-fly (51.58). Roseberry took the 200-fly (1:55.39) and 500-free (4:42.85), while Kutt swept the backstroke events with times of 50.83 in the 100 and 1:52.78 in the 200.

Other individual winners for UMBC were seniors Tim Conway in the 50-free (21.47), Ryan Karrer in the 1,000-free (9:45.27) and Juan Ortiz in the 200-IM (2:00.61). Conway’s time in the 50-free beat his previous season best by half a second and was less than three-tenths off his personal best.

The Retrievers also swept the relays, as sophomore Milos Djukic, Auchter, freshman Zach Vonder Haar and Conway won the 200-medley relay in 1:36.31 and Conway, Bronson, freshman Matt Mattingly and Kutt took first in the 400-free relay in 3:11.61.

UMBC took the top four spots in the 500-free, 1000-free and 200-fly and the top three in the 50-free, 200-back, 200-breast and 200-IM. Eric Pinno posted the Tigers’ only win of the meet, taking the 100-free.

The Retrievers return to action next weekend as they head to Fairfax, Va., for the George Mason Patriot Invitational Nov. 17-19.
