UMBC Swimming and Diving Sweeps Colgate

    Meghan Sackett won three events in the Retrievers' victory over Colgate.

    Baltimore-The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Colgate Sunday afternoon at UMBC Natatorium. The Retriever men improve to 3-1 on the season with a 166-108 victory over the Raiders (1-4), while the women go to 5-1 with a 161.5-133.5 win over Colgate (3-3).

     

    The UMBC men took 15 of 16 events on the day, with multiple victories by sophomore Justin Bronson, freshman Rasmus Kutt and senior diver Jeff Salgado. Bronson won his seventh and eighth consecutive events with victories in the 200-fly (1:55.68) and 500-free (4:43.42). He has not lost an individual race yet this season. Kutt took the 100-back (51.95) and 100-free (49.02), and Salgado swept the diving events for the third time this season with scores of 282.90 on the 1-meter board and 290.62 on the 3-meter.

     

    Other winners for the Retrievers included senior Ryan Karrer in the 1,000-free (9:40.35); senior Juan Ortiz in the 200-free (1:45.32); junior Scott Auchter in the 100-breast (59.94); freshman Matt Mattingly in the 50-free (22.31); sophomore Milos Djukic in the 200-back (1:56.00); senior Pat Woodward in the 200-breast (2:13.91) and senior Brian Jaeggi in the 200-IM (1:59.71).

     

    The wins were career firsts for Mattingly and Woodward.

     

    UMBC also swept the relays, as Karrer, senior Tim Conway, Kutt and freshman John Seniz won the 400-free relay in 3:16.88 and Djukic, Auchter, freshman Zach Vonder Haar and Bronson took the 200-medley relay in 1:36.67.

     

    The Retrievers swept five events, taking the top three spots in the 200-, 500- and 1,000-free, the 100-back, the 200-breast and the 200-IM, including the top four spots in the 200-, 500- and 1,000-free.

     

    Zach Whitman won the 100-fly for Colgate, the Raiders’ only victory on the day.

     

    On the women’s side, the Retrievers won 13 of 16 events and were led by senior Agnes Stanislawska and junior Meghan Sackett, who each won three events. Stanislawska took first in the 100-back (59.00), the 200-back (2:05.21) and the 200-IM (2:11.56), while Sackett was victorious in the 200-free (1:54.31), the 500-free (5:06.23) and the 200-fly (2:09.55).

     

    Sophomores Tina Cantwell and Danielle Surkovich and senior diver Ashley Houghton also won two events apiece, as Cantwell took the 100- and 200-breast (1:04.87 and 2:19.49), Surkovich won he 50- and 100-free (24.42 and 52.61)and Houghton swept the diving events with scores of 239.54 on the 1-meter board and 255.45 on the 3-meter.

     

    Junior Rachel Lesslie also won the 1,000-free (10:46.24) for UMBC, her first victory of the season.

     

    Stanislawska led a sweep in the 200-IM, as freshman Tereza Kaplanova and Cantwell placed second and third in the event, respectively.

     

    Beverly Walker was Colgate’s lone individual winner on the day as she took the 100-fly, but the Raiders also swept the relays.

     

    The Retrievers return to action Saturday, Nov. 11, when they travel to in-state rival Towson at 1 p.m.
