UMBC’S GEZA SZABO SELECTED TO COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT FIRST TEAM

5/25/2006

Geza Szabo earns Academic All-District recognition for the second straight year.

Baltimore, Md.-UMBC senior swimmer Geza Szabo (Szolnok, Hungary/Ady Endre Gimnazium) earned ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II University Division At-Large First Team honors, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Szabo now advances to the national competition, where he will compete with members of each all-district first team for Academic All-America recognition.

Szabo was selected to the Academic All-District Second Team last season. A financial economics major who is graduating Thursday, he has compiled an outstanding 3.77 grade-point average in his four years at UMBC, posting a perfect 4.0 in two semesters. He has received semester academic honors six times and Dean’s List five times, and he was named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll twice.

Szabo has excelled in the pool, as well, and he went out in style in the final swim of his collegiate career, the 200-yard butterfly finals at the America East Championships. He broke his own school record in the event in which he had originally set the mark as a freshman in December 2002. After winning the conference title in the event last year, Szabo took silver in 2006. He also placed second in the 100-fly and 400-medley relay, third in the 200-medley relay and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle at the league championships, and he won the 200-fly at all but one dual meet this season.

Over his career, Szabo has won one Northeast Conference title, one America East title and one ECAC title, including the 500-free at the 2003 NEC Championships, the 200-fly at the 2005 America East Championships and the 200-fly at the 2004 ECAC’s, and he has taken home medals in both individual and relay events at all three meets. He was also named the 2003 Northeast Conference Rookie of the Meet.

A team co-captain for the second straight season, Szabo helped lead the Retriever men to their third consecutive America East title.

The Academic All-District II at-large team in the university division consists of athletes from all sports except soccer, volleyball, football, basketball, baseball, softball, cross country and track and field from Division-I schools in Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00.  He must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at the institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
