HOUGHTON, SALGADO TO COMPETE AT NCAA ZONE DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP

3/9/2006

Jeff Salgado holds both school diving records.

Baltimore, Md.-UMBC Junior divers Ashley Houghton and Jeff Salgado head to Annapolis this weekend for the NCAA Zone ‘A’ Diving Championship at Navy’s Lejeune Hall. Competition will begin Friday, March 10 at 1 p.m. and conclude Sunday, March 12.

Houghton scored her qualifying marks against Navy on Oct. 29, with scores of 273.59 on the 1-meter board – a school record – and 293.40 on the 3-meter. She bested her 3-meter score at the America East Championships with a school-record 300.15.

On the season, Houghton swept the two diving competitions at all but two dual meets, and she broke both school records. She also was named both America East and ECAC Most Outstanding Diver after winning the 1-meter and placing second in the 3-meter at the conference championships in February and winning both events at ECAC’s last month.

Salgado broke both school records multiple times on the season. He set the current marks of 350.55 on the 1-meter board against Howard on Jan. 11, and 314.85 on the 3-meter board just 10 days later against East Carolina.

At the America East Conference Championships last month, Salgado placed third on the 1-meter board and fourth on the 3-meter. The next week, he placed second on the 3-meter and third on the 1-meter at ECAC’s.

The women’s 1-meter and men’s 3-meter prelims and finals will take place on Friday. Saturday will be the men’s 1-meter and women’s 3-meter competitions. The men’s and women’s platform events will be held on Sunday. Action begins at 1 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, and at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Divers from 66 schools across the region – including America East rivals Binghamton, Boston University, Maine, New Hampshire, Stony Brook and Vermont – will compete at the Zone ‘A’ Championships this weekend. Four men and four women from Zone ‘A’ will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held later this month.

The four other zone championships will take place this weekend as well at Kentucky, Ohio State, Missouri and Air Force. The Women’s NCAA Championships are next weekend, March 16-18, at University of Georgia, while the Men’s NCAA Championships are a week later, March 23-25, at Georgia Tech.
