HOUGHTON WINS THREE-METER DIVING AT ECAC’S

    Ashley Houghton won the women's three-meter diving competition at the ECAC Championships.

    Pittsburgh, Pa.-Junior diver Ashley Houhgton (Frederick, Md./Urbana/Pittsburgh) won the three-meter competition at the ECAC Championships Friday night as she returned to Trees Pool for the first time since transferring from Pittsburgh to UMBC before the 2005-06 season

     

    Houghton scored 275.25 in the evening’s finals after entering the session as the top seed with a preliminary score of 252.80.

     

    Junior diver Jeff Salgado (Glen Rock, Pa./South Western/St. Bonaventure) was the only other Retriever to qualify for the finals on Friday and placed second in the men’s three-meter competition with a score of 308.60.

     

    In the morning’s preliminaries, sophomore Joey Sementelli (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) placed 27th in the 500-free (4:53.20) and freshman Evan Roseberry (Sinking Springs, Pa./Wilson) came in 23rd in the 200-IM (1:59.96).

     

    Having only scored in one event each, the Retriever men are 13th overall with 17 points, while the women are 14th with 20 points. UMBC’s America East rival Binghamton, which finished second to the Retrievers last weekend at the America East Championships, lead the ECAC competition with 152 team points, while Marist has 190 points to lead on the women’s side.

     

    Saturday’s action will feature Houghton in the women’s one-meter diving, Sementelli and sophomore Andrew Cheung (Tecumseh, Ontario/Vincent Massey) in the men’s 400-IM; freshman Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) in the men’s 100-fly; freshman Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) in the women’s 200-free; Roseberry and junior Juan Ortiz (Cali, Colombia/Indian River CC) in the men’s 200-free; freshman Tina Cantwell (Sinking Springs, Pa./The Hill School) in the women’s 100-breast; sophomore Scott Auchter (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson), senior Ian Carey (Glenside, Pa./LaSalle) and junior Pat Woodward (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) in the men’s 100-breast; and freshman Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic) in the men’s 100-back.
