KARRER NAMED AMERICA EAST MEN’S CO-SWIMMER OF THE WEEK

1/31/2006

Ryan Karrer was named America East Men's Co-Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 31.

Boston-UMBC junior Ryan Karrer (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) was named America East Men’s Co-Swimmer of the Week for the week ending Jan. 29, the conference announced Tuesday.

Karrer was UMBC’s only multiple winner at Marist, as he swept the distance freestyle events with times of 4:43.50 in the 500-free and 9:36.31 in the 1,000-free. He finished more than seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in the 1,000-free. It is the eighth time Karrer has won both distance events in a dual meet this season.

This is Karrer’s third conference weekly performance honor this season. The first award came on Nov. 1 after he swept the distance freestyle events in each of the Retrievers’ first three dual meets and broke New Hampshire’s Swasey Pool record in the 1,000-free. He garnered the honor again on Dec. 6 after winning both distance events against Bucknell.

Karrer shares the Men’s Swimmer of the Week award with Binghamton’s David Holmes. Other conference performers of the week were Stony Brook’s Shirlee Manoogian (Women’s Swimmer of the Week) and Binghamton’s Ryan Graham (Men’s Diver of the Week).

The Retrievers have two weeks off before heading to Boston for the America East Conference Championships Feb. 16-19.
