SALGADO, HOUGHTON SWEEP AMERICA EAST DIVER OF THE WEEK HONORS

1/17/2006

Jeff Salgado was named America East Men's Diver of the Week.

Ashley Houghton was named America East Women's Diver of the Week.

Boston-UMBC juniors Jeff Salgado (Glen Rock, Pa./South Western/St. Bonaventure) and Ashley Houghton (Frederick, Md./Urbana/Pittsburgh) were named America East Men’s and Women’s Diver of the Week for the week ending Jan. 15, the conference announced Tuesday.

Salgado swept the diving events in Wednesday’s win over Howard and shattered his own school record on the 1-meter board with a score of 350.55, which qualifies him for the NCAA Zone Regionals. He had set the previous mark at 310.28 last month against Bucknell. It is the third time this season that Salgado has reset the 1-meter record. He also won the 3-meter competition against Howard with a score of 296.70.

Houghton won both diving events against Howard with scores of 231.97 on the 1-meter board and 291.15 on the 3-meter board. Her 3-meter score was just more than two points below her school record of 293.40.

Other conference performers of the week were Binghamton’s David Holmes (Men’s Swimmer of the Week) and New Hampshire’s Shannon Daly (Women’s Swimmer of the Week).

The Retrievers return to action Saturday, Jan. 21, when they host East Carolina at 1 p.m. at the UMBC Natatorium. As it is the last home meet of the season, all six of the Retriever seniors will be honored on Senior Day. The Retrievers will also welcome back swimming and diving alumni for Alumni Day.
