UMBC SWIMMING AND DIVING HANDLES HOWARD

    Jeff Salgado shattered his own school record on the 1-meter board.

    Baltimore, Md.-In their first dual meet after a five-week break, the UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Howard Wednesday afternoon at the UMBC Natatorium. The Retriever men defeated the Bison, 84-69, to improve to 5-3 on the season, while the women won, 104-80, to stay perfect at 8-0.

     

    The men won all but two events and were led by junior diver Jeff Salgado (Glen Rock, Pa./South Western/St. Bonaventure) and freshman Evan Roseberry (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson), who each claimed two individual victories. Salgado shattered his own school record on the 1-meter board with a score of 350.55. He set the previous mark at 310.28 against Bucknell last month. It is the third time this season that Salgado has reset the 1-meter record. Salgado also won the 3-meter competition with a score of 296.70. Roseberry took the 400-IM in 4:13.98 and the 100-free in 49.92.

     

    Other winners for the Retriever men included freshman Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) in the 1,000-free (9:45.00), senior Geza Szabo (Szolnok, Hungary/Ady Endre Gimnazium) in the 200-free (1:46.60), junior Juan Ortiz (Cali, Colombia/Indian River CC) in the 100-fly (54.65), freshman Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic) in the 100-back (53.36) and sophomore Joey Sementelli (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) in the 500-free (4:53.21).

     

    The Retrievers also swept the relays, with Djukic, sophomore Scott Auchter (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson), sophomore Eric Skrabacz (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) and junior Tim Conway (Brick, N.J./Brick) winning the 200-medley relay in 1:37.70, and Bronson, Conway, senior Adam Blais (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) and Ortiz taking the 200-free relay in 1:29.40.

     

    On the women’s side, junior Ashley Houghton (Frederick, Md./Urbana/Pittsburgh) was the only multiple winner for the Retrievers, as she swept the diving events with scores of 231.97 on the 1-meter board and 291.15 on the 3-meter.

     

    Other individual winners for the Retriever women, who won all but two events on the day, included junior Jesse Rowton (College Park, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) in the 1,000-free (11:16.46), freshman Elisha Peregino (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) in the 200-free (2:02.92), sophomore Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney/Maryland) in the 400-IM (4:38.29), freshman Brittany Bertoli (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) in the 100-fly (1:02.79), freshman Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) in the 100-back (1:00.08), sophomore Lindsey Engler (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) in the 500-free (5:22.87) and freshman Robin Klein (McMinnville, Ore./McMinnville) in the 100-breast (1:08.17).

     

    The Retrievers also swept the relays, with junior Agnes Stanislawska (Zielona Gora, Poland/LO VI Zielona Gora), Klein, Sackett and Surkovich winning the 200-medley relay in 1:51.88, and Surkovich, Klein, Sackett and Stanislawska taking the 200-free relay in 1:40.93.

     

    The Retrievers return to action Saturday, Jan. 21, when they host East Carolina at 1 p.m. at the UMBC Natatorium. As it is the last home meet of the season, all six of the Retriever seniors will be honored on Senior Day. The Retrievers will also welcome back swimming and diving alumni for Alumni Day.
