Baltimore, Md.-The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Bucknell in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at UMBC Natatorium. The Retriever men defeated the Bison, 142-94, while the UMBC women won, 141-94. Both the men’s and women’s teams won all but one event, and junior diver Jeff Salgado (Glen Rock, Pa./South Western/St. Bonaventure) broke his own school 1-meter diving record. The Retriever men improve to 4-3 on the season, while Bucknell’s men fall to 1-2. UMBC’s women stay perfect at 7-0 on the year while handing the Bison women (2-1) their first loss of the season.
Salgado scored 312.45 on the 1-meter board, shattering his own record of 301.65, which he set at Binghamton about a month ago, on Nov. 5. Salgado swept the diving events, also winning the 3-meter board with a score of 285.23.
Junior Ryan Karrer (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) was the only other multiple winner for the Retrievers, as he swept the distance events for the fifth time this season with times of 4:41.14 in the 500-free and 9:38.63 in the 1,000 free.
Other winners for the Retriever men included freshman Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/MSGR. Paul Dwyer) in the 200-free (1:43.10), junior Tim Conway (Brick, N.J./Brick Township Memorial) in the 50-free (22.20), senior Adam Blais (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) in the 200-IM (1:56.84), senior Geza Szabo (Szolnok, Hungary/Ady Endre Gimnazium) in the 200-fly (1:51.90), freshman Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic) in the 200-back (1:52.88) and sophomore Scott Auchter (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson) in the 200-breast (2:10.97).
The Retrievers also swept the relays, with Djukic, Auchter, Szabo and Conway winning the 400-medley relay in 3:29.99 and junior Juan Ortiz (Cali, Columbia/Indian River CC), freshman Evan Roseberry (Sinking Springs, Pa./Wilson), Blais and Bronson taking the 400-free relay in 3:11.41.
The women were led by sophomore Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney/Maryland), who won the 200-free (1:51.85), the 200-fly (2:07.79) and the 500-free (4:59.02). Freshman Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) and juniors Ashley Houghton (Frederick, Md./Urbana/Pittsburgh) and Agnes Stanislawska (Zielona Gora, Poland/LO VI Zielona Gora) each one two events, as Surkovich took the 100-free (52.65) and the 1,000-free (10:23.40), Stanislawska won the 200-IM (2:08.13) and the 200-breast (2:21.77) and Houghton swept the diving events with scores of 229.49 on the 1-meter board and 260.63 on the 3-meter board.
Sophomore Lindsey Engler (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) was the only other individual winner for the Retriever women, as she took the 50-free in 24.87. UMBC also swept the relays, as Stanislawska, freshman Tina Cantwell (Sinking Springs, Pa./The Hill School), Engler and senior Elyse Gibson (Nova Scotia, Canada/Queen Elizabeth) won the 400-medley relay in 3:58.44 and Engler, Gibson, freshman Robin Klein (McMinnville, Ore./McMinnville) and Surkovich took the 400-free relay in 3:37.66.
The Retrievers now have five weeks off for training before returning to competition Jan. 11 as the host regional foe Howard at 2 p.m. at the UMBC Natatorium.
