SACKETT GARNERS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE AMERICA EAST SWIMMER OF THE WEEK

11/22/2005

Meghan Sackett was named America East Women's Simmer of the Week for the fourth consecutive week.

Boston-UMBC sophomore Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney/Maryland) was named America East Women’s Swimmer of the Week for the fourth straight week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Sackett broke three individual school records, three school relay records and five meet records at the George Mason Patriot Invitational, winning four individual events and two relays to lead the Retrievers to a second-place finish. She was also the Retrievers’ top individual scorer, amassing 80 points.

On Nov. 18, the first day of competition, Sackett broke her own school record in the 500-free, which she had previously set last week against Towson, by more than three seconds with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 4:50.42, also lowering the Patriot Invite mark which she had set during the morning prelims.

The next day, Sackett swam a 1:51.22 in the 200-free, besting both the UMBC and meet record. She also anchored the winning 800-free relay team which lowered UMBC’s 11-year-old record to 7:34.75 and also set a new meet mark, and she was a part of the third-place 200-medley relay, which lowered the school record to 1:47.67.

On the final day of competition, Sackett won both the 1,650-free and the 100-free, and shattered the school’s 16-year-old mile record by almost 12 seconds with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 16:47.07. She was also part of the winning 400-free relay which set a new UMBC and Patriot Invite record with a time of 3:29.02. The previous school record had stood since 1994.

Other conference performers of the week for the week ending Nov. 20 were Binghamton’s Kaan Tayla (Men’s Swimmer of the Week), Maine’s Keith Burgie (Men’s Diver of the Week) and New Hampshire’s Shana Dege (Women’s Diver of the Week).

The Retrievers return to action Saturday, Dec. 3, when they host Bucknell at 1 p.m. at the UMBC Natatorium.
