RETRIEVER MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS PLACE SECOND AT GEORGE MASON PATRIOT INVITATIONAL; WOMEN BREAK TWO MORE SCHOOL RECORDS

    Fairfax, Va.-The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each finished second at the George Mason Patriot Invitational, which concluded Sunday evening. The women amassed 738.5 team points, only 31.5 behind first-place Yale (770), while the men totaled 742.5 points, behind only Yale’s 990.

     

    The women broke two more school records on the third day of competition, for a total of eight on the weekend. Sophomore Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney/Maryland) took down her third UMBC mark in as many days, this time shattering Sue Herzog’s 16-year-old 1,650-free record by nearly 12 seconds with a winning time of 16:47.07. Herzog’s previous mark of 16:58.57 had stood since 1989. Sackett also set a new Patriot Invite record.

     

    In addition, the 400-free relay team of freshmen Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) and Robin Klein (McMinnville, Ore./McMinnville), Sackett and senior Elyse Gibson (Nova Scotia, Canada/Queen Elizabeth) lowered the school record by more than two seconds with a winning time of 3:29.02. The previous mark of 3:31.29 had stood since 1994.

     

    Sackett also won the 100-free (52.42), while Surkovich placed third (52.68), Gibson came in sixth (52.95) and Engler finished eighth (53.22). Senior Agnes Stanislawska (Zielona Gora, Poland/LO VI Zielona Gora) took the 200-breast (2:18.55), while freshmen Tina Cantwell (Sinking Springs, Pa./The Hill School) and Joy Wilde (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) came in third and sixth, respectively, in 2:21.79 and 2:25.53.

     

    Other finalists for the Retriever women included Stanislawska, who placed third in the 200-back (2:03.54); Surkovich, who finished fifth in the 200-fly (2:08.11); senior Amber Harris (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia), who took fifth in the 200-back (2:04.30); and sophomore Rachel Lesslie (Kingston, Ontario, Canada/Holy Cross), who came in seventh in the 1,650-free (17:29.17).

     

    The men were led by senior Geza Szabo (Szolnok, Hungary/Ady Endre Gimnazium), who won the 200-fly in 1:50.28. Freshman Evan Roseberry (Sinking Springs, Pa./Wilson) also placed sixth in the event with a time of 1:54.19.

     

    Other finalists for the Retriever men included junior Ryan Karrer (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) and Roseberry, who came in second and third, respectively, in the 1,650-free with times of 15:46.98 and 15:59.52; freshman Freddie Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), sophomore Scott Auchter (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson) and senior Ian Carey (Glenside, Pa./LaSalle College HS), who finished second, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200-breast; freshman Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic), who placed fifth in the 200-back (1:52.98); and freshman Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/MSGR. Paul Dwyer), who took seventh in the 100-free (47.45). The Retrievers’ 400-free relay team also came in third with a time of 3:07.88.

     

    The Retrievers return to action Saturday, Dec. 3, when they return home to face Bucknell at 1 p.m. at the UMBC Natatorium.
