RETRIEVER SWIMMERS SWEEP UMASS, CENTRAL CONNECTICUT

The Retriever swimming teams continued their outstanding 2001-2002 seasons with a sweep of Massachusetts and NEC foe Central Connecticut this weekend. The Retriever women nipped UMBC, 157-143, while the men edged the Minutemen, 174-126. UMBC overwhelmed Central in both meets, taking the women's meet, 151-75, and capturning the men's side, 160-69. The women improved to 5-3 on the season, while the men are now an impressive 6-1. Astrid Sperling led UMBC over U. Mass, with three victories in the 100 backstroke, the 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley. Freshman Jessica Prosen led the way vs. Central, with wins in the 1000 freestyle and 400 I.M. The men took 12 of the 16 events vs. U. Mass and the relay team of Ramon James, Karl Strauss, Ron Park, and Evan Patrick set a new Central pool record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:31.41.
