UMBC SWIMMING AND DIVING SWEEPS TOWSON; SACKETT BREAKS 500 FREE RECORD

    Baltimore, Md.-The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept a dual meet Saturday afternoon for the third time this season, as the women defeated local rival Towson, 146.5-85.5, to remain perfect at 6-0 and the men improved to 3-3 with their 94-58 victory. The Retriever men and women swept every event from the Tigers.

     

    Sophomore Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney/Maryland) broke UMBC’s 16-year-old 500-yard freestyle record with a time of 4:53.57. Sue Herzog set the previous mark at 4:54.20 in 1989. It was the second record in as many meets which Sackett has bested, as she shattered Herzog’s 1,000-free record by nearly 12 seconds last Sunday at Seton Hall. Sackett also won the 200-free (1:52.03).

     

    Freshman Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake), junior Agnes Stanislawska (Zielona Gora, Poland/LO VI Zielona Gora) and junior Ashley Houghton (Frederick, Md./Urbana/Pittsburgh) also won two events apiece. Surkovich took the 50-free (24.65) and the 200-fly (2:10.94), while Stanislawska won the 200-IM (2:08.86) and the 200-breast (2:21.47). Houghton swept the diving events for the sixth consecutive meet with scores of 253.13 on the 1-meter board and 260.62 on the 3-meter.

     

    Other winners for the Retriever women included sophomore Rachel Lesslie (Kingston, Ontario, Canada/Holy Cross) in the 1,000-free (10:44.70), freshman Robin Klein (McMinnville, Ore./McMinnville) in the 100-free (54.29) and senior Amber Harris (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) in the 200-back (2:10.08).

     

    UMBC also swept the relays, as Stanislawska, freshman Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School), freshman Elisha Peregino (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) and sophomore Lindsey Engler (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) teamed up to win the 400-medley relay in 4:04.11, while Surkovich, senior Elyse Gibson (Nova Scotia, Canada/Queen Elizabeth), Klein and Sackett won the 400-free relay in 3:36.58.

     

    The men were led by junior Tim Conway (Brick, N.J./Brick Township Memorial), freshman Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/MSGR. Paul Dwyer) and junior Jeff Salgado (Glen Rock, Pa./South Western/St. Bonaventure), who each notched two individual victories. Conway won the 50-free (22.05) and the 100-free (48.59), while Bronson took the 200-free (1:43.87) and the 500-free (4:41.14). Salgado swept the diving events for the fourth consecutive meet with scores of 246.15 on the 1-meter board and 275.40 on the 3-meter board.

     

    Other individual winners for the Retriever men included junior Ryan Karrer (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) in the 1,000-free (9:32.23), junior Juan Ortiz (Cali Columbia/Indian River CC) in the 200-IM (1:58.80), senior Geza Szabo (Szolnok, Hungary/Ady Endre Gimnazium) in the 200-fly (1:53.15), freshman Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic) in the 200-back (1:54.29) and freshman Freddie Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) in the 200-breast (2:13.13).

     

    UMBC also swept the relays, as Djukic, sophomore Scott Auchter (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson), Szabo and Ortiz teamed up to take the 400-medley relay in 3:33.54, while Conway, senior Adam Blais (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook), Ortiz and Bronson won the 400-free relay in 3:13.35.

     

    The Retrievers return to action next weekend, as they head to Fairfax, Va., for the George Mason Invitational Nov. 18-20.
