TOM HIMES INDUCTED INTO MARYLAND SWIMMING HALL OF FAME
UMBC Assistant Swimming Coach Tom Himes was inducted into the Maryland Swimming Hall of Fame on April 28, 2005.
Tom Himes first tested the waters in the summer of 1963 at Lochearn Pool where he would swim for the next twelve years. The next year, he was still at the pool, now as head coach. For the next five summers, Tom guided the summer swimming teams at Lochearn, and later Glen Burnie Park. He began his year round coaching with the Howard County YMCA in the Fall of 1979. Tom began as an assistant age group coach becoming the head coach a year later. In 1985, Tom took an opening at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club for Head Age Group Coach, a position he would hold for the next fifteen years.
In 2000, as the team expanded into Harford County and York, Pennsylvania, Tom became to head coach of the Harford County site. Additionally, during the next two years, Tom returned to summer league coaching in Harford County. 1999-2000 also saw Tom as an assistant coach at Towson University. Since 2002, Tom has been coaching for both UMBC and the Retriever Aquatic Club. Along the way, Tom has served with distinction on the Board of Maryland Swimming.
From 1989 until the present day, Tom has served Maryland Swimming in various capacities such as Coaches Representative, Records Chairman, Technical Planning Chair, Zone Team Manager and the All-Star/State Championship Meet Director. He has been the Manager for or been a coach of Maryland Zone Teams from 1985 until 2003. Holding a Level 5 ASCA certification, Tom has been a speaker at coaches clinics in Florida (1993), Louisiana (1995) and Birmingham, England(1997). He was honored by Maryland Swimming as Age Group Coach of the Year in 1998, 2000, and 2002. During his tenure at NBAC, the team won numerous National Age Group Team Championships.
Three of his age groupers went on to Olympic fame, notably Beth Botsford (USA 1996), Casey Barrett (Canada, 1996)and Michael Phelps (USA, 2000 & 2004). The numbers describing Tomís achievements are monumental: over 50 swimmers combined to achieve more than 415 USA Swimming National Top 16 Rankings; 72 swimmers have achieved #1 USA Swimming National Age Group Rankings; 37 National Age Group Records. Tom coached swimmers to over 350 Maryland Swimming Records. Among his numerous achievements, Tom has coached many Zone, Junior National, Sectional and National Qualifiers. Many have coached on various levels, Summer League, Age Group, Senior, and Collegiate, but few have had the success at all levels as Tom Himes.
Tom married his wife Betty in 1985 and they are the parents of two children, Rebecca and Matthew.
