UMBC MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING TRIES TO COMPLETE PERFECT SEASON; WOMEN GO FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

2/2/2005

Baltimore, Md. – This weekend, the UMBC men’s swimming and diving squad will attempt to become the first team in the school’s Division I history to finish a season undefeated and untied. Currently, the team is at 9-0 going into Saturday’s dual meet against cross-town rival Johns Hopkins (9-3), while the Retriever women (7-3) will try to go for their fourth straight win against the Blue Jay women (5-5), at 12 p.m. at the UMBC Natatorium.

Previously, only the 1999 UMBC men’s soccer team has come close to a perfect year, finishing the regular season at 19-0-1, before bowing out in a 4-3 overtime loss to Duke in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

So far this season, the men’s swimming and diving team has defeated William & Mary, Rider, Navy, Binghamton, Seton Hall, Towson, Howard, George Washington, and Marist. In the most recent poll by CollegeSwimming.com, they are ranked eighth in the nation among Division I Mid-Major teams with a score of 233.61.

Two weeks after their final dual meet (February 18-21), UMBC will host the America East Swimming & Diving Championships. The Retriever men look to defend their title, and garner their eighth straight conference championship, while the women hope to improve from their second-place finish in 2004.
